Lemarchand's box
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Lemarchand's boxes are fictional lock puzzles referenced in horror stories by Clive
Barker, or in works based on his original stories. The best known of these boxes is the
Lament Configuration, from The Hellbound Heart, a horror story which became the
movie Hellraiser.
There are several versions of the origin of the Lament Configuration. The character of
Lemarchand first appeared in the EPIC Hellraiser comic series and was portrayed as
an older man. This version, created with the support of Clive Barker, was a mass
murderering serial killer who used human fat and bone in the construction of his boxes.
He was aided by a material given to him by the Cenobite "Baron".
However the film Hellraiser: Bloodline was written after where the history of
Lemarchand was changed into one more basic and less interesting. This version
stated that the box was commissioned by Duc de l'Isle in 1784 and constructed by
toymaker Philip Lemarchand. As this version of events was in fact a story told by the
character of Paul Merchant to Rimmer, it is possible to speculate that he simply had his
history incorrect.
A "short rondo of sublime banality" is played after each piece is removed. When the
box is solved, it opens a "schism" (pathway) to Hell, through which Cenobites
(demons) travel.
Apart from the Lament Configuration, other boxes that appear in Clive Barker's work
include the Elegy Configuration, the Ornate Box, Orno's Puzzle Box, and the
Dreamweave Cube.
The Cenobites are demons who appear in the works of Clive Barker, including the
novella "The Hellbound Heart" and the eight Hellraiser films.
The term "cenobite" is an archaic Latin word meaning simply "a member of a
communal religious order", see cenobitic.
The Cenobites all have serious mutilations or body piercings. The best known of the
Cenobites in the Hellraiser films is Pinhead, who appears in all eight films and is played
by the actor Doug Bradley. Pinhead's mutilation consists of pins that have been
hammered through his flesh into his skull in a grid pattern and six open wounds on his
lower torso with the flesh peeled back. Other Cenobites have much more severe
mutilations.
The Cenobites in each film are:
Hellraiser (1987)
Pinhead - Lead Cenobite, The Angel of Suffering, The Dark Prince of Pain
Female Cenobite - Sister Nikoletta
Butterball - Laslo
Chatterer - The Angel of Suffering
The Engineer - (note - not actually a Cenobite but a demon that stalks Hell's
corridors)Some other sources believe that the Engineer is actually the hoboe that gave
the puzzle box to Frank in the first Hellraiser. Since he supposedly made horrific items
like the puzzle box-and considering he turned into a dragon at the end of the first
movie- he really could be Engineer.

In his satirical The Devil's Dictionary, the well-known writer Ambrose Bierce defined:
COENOBITE, n. A man who piously shuts himself up to meditate upon the sin of
wickedness; and to keep it fresh in his mind joins a brotherhood of awful examples.
