"Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may be come a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright"
|

Following the death of his older brother, Lawrence Talbot returns to his ancestral
estate after an 18 year absence to claim his rightful place in the family hierarchy. It
is upon his return that he takes a liking to Gwen Conliffe and purchases an antique
silver tipped, wolf's head walking stick.
Despite Gwen's engagement to Frank Andrews, she agrees to a date with Larry.
Bringing along her good friend Jenny, they visit a nearby gypsy camp where Jenny
volunteers to have her fortune told by Bela the gypsy. Spotting a pentagram on the
palm of Jenny's right hand, which marks her for death at the hands of a werewolf,
Bela frightens Jenny from his tent as he turns into a werewolf.
Larry hears Jenny's screams and rushes to her rescue and desperately wrestles with
the huge wolf that is hovering over Jenny. He clubs the Wolf to death with his
silver tipped cane but not before he is bitten in the struggle.
The investigating officer fails to locate the carcass of the dead wolf, instead finding
the bludgeoned body of Bela. Larry is questioned by the authorities and he tells
them of his struggle with the Wolf, but his wounds have mysteriously disappeared.
At Bela's funeral, Larry confronts the dead gypsy's mother, Maleva, where she
warns him that the curse of the werewolf has been passed onto him. Disturbed by
this news, Larry leaves as the power of the full moon begins to take effect.
Wandering through the forest, Larry has now become a werewolf and as such kills
a grave digger. He awakens the next morning barely able to recall his ordeal.
Lon Chaney, Jr.'s enduring portrayal of the doomed Larry Talbot is regarded as one
of the most tragic characterizations in all of Hollywood's classic horror films.
