THE MUMMY, step by
step
This is my basic work area. It's messy and not as large a work surface as I
might want, but hey, it beats the kitchen table right?
This is the GEOMETRIC kit of Karloff's MUMMY after cleanup and priming.
Its an excellent kit with minimal seam work to deal with. I've used a simple
Krylon grey primer to give the paint something to 'bite' into and to highlight
any flaws that I may have missed
First I start with a basic wash to bring out the nice skin details. I use oil paint
for all my washes. The primer coat is now dry and a basic undercoat of acrylic
paint has been applied. The oil paint will not react with the acrylic, nor will the
odorless turpentine that I use to thin the oil paints
Another wash applied. I use raw sienna and also mix in a wash or too of
sepia extra
More washes applied. After a short time to dry I hit it with TESTORS flat.
Then a light dry brushing starts to bring out detail and add some additional
color and shading
I keep adding more washes and then dry brushing to build up layers of
color and depth. I use various shades to make the hair stand out and the
exposed skin on the nose 'pop'. Its not really a long process and relatively
easy to do. Try it!, you'll like the way oils are forgiving to mistakes and how
easily they make a beautiful wash- and its cheap too!
